Emergency stop of the metro train

What should you do if you witness a person fall onto the tracks in a metro station? As quickly as possible, find the "Emergency Train Stop" button for the respective track and press it. Every second can mean a saved human life.

Emergency Train Stop (hereafter referred to as “ETS”) safety buttons are located on the platforms of metro stations for each track separately. They are usually located at the beginning and end of the platform on the panelling, or on the columns, always according to the architectural design of the individual station.

The buttons are covered by a protective glass. So how to use the button?
When pressed, the glass will crack, slide downwards and free up the space for pressing. In an emergency, keys or other objects can be used to break the glass, but we do not recommend this, as fragments can block the button. The finger push procedure is safe and reliable.

By pressing the ETS button, the train interlocking device receives a signal, thanks to which it either stops the train or does not allow it to start.

The Emergency Train Stop button is located in every station, next to each track.

 What else should you know?

  • If the train is within a sufficient braking distance before the station where a person has fallen onto the track or the train is just leaving the previous station, pressing the ETS button will bring the train to a safe stop before the incriminated station. Analogously, all following trains in the given direction will be stopped in order to prevent their collision.
  • If the train is already entering the station where a person has fallen onto the track or the braking distance of the train is insufficient for the incriminated place and the corresponding ETS button is activated at the same time, it is not always possible to guarantee that the train will stop at the desired place due to the speed and braking distance of the train or the track incline. The entry speed to the station under standard conditions is on average around 55 km/h.
  • If the train is in the station and is checking in passengers, pressing the ETS button prevents its departure. The ETS button is used if a passenger has fallen between cars or in front of a standing train.
  • In all cases, activating the ETS button will also affect the signal signs on the respective light signals associated with this safety button.

Misuse of the ETS button is a criminal offence. We appeal to passengers to use it only in case of a person falling onto the track.
